Hurricane Irma update


9th October 2017: 12:00 GMT

The local teams in the British Virgin Islands and St. Martin have made great progress in just a short time since Hurricane Irma and Maria passed through these territories. We are working hard along with our partners in the cruising grounds to welcome guests back for the winter sailing season. The BVI will re-open December 9, 2017 and St. Martin will re-open February 1, 2018. 

We are excited to announce that the British Virgin Islands will receive 130 new boats for a value of $66.5m thanks to the financial strength of our company.

Our destinations in the BahamasBelizeAntiguaGrenada and St. Lucia were unaffected and continue to operate charters normally.

Tourism is the beating heart of the Caribbean and we are determined to rebuild and come back stronger than ever.  We’d like to thank our operational teams for the incredible work they are doing in very difficult conditions. Aid efforts to our affected teams continue, with shipments of much needed supplies currently en route.

If you have a scheduled charter departure in the BVI and Puerto Rico between now and December 8th 2017, or in St Martin between now and January 31st, please contact our Holiday Planners at 1-800-803-988 or sales@sunsailwhitsundays.com.au for assistance with rearranging your charter. We are still experiencing heavy call volumes, so we appreciate your patience as wait times may be longer than usual.

Our base in Antigua will reopen on November 4th with an expanded fleet.

Our destinations the Bahamas, Belize, Antigua, Grenada and St. Lucia were unaffected and continue to operate charters normally, and we are augmenting our fleet in all of these locations for the coming season.

The recent Hurricane activity in the Caribbean has greatly affected our base operations in the British Virgin Islands and St. Martin. Most recently, we have been preparing for and monitoring Hurricane Maria, which has already caused extensive damage in several Caribbean islands and has now passed through Puerto Rico. Thankfully, the impact of Hurricane Maria on our already distressed bases in the BVI and St. Martin was limited.

Again, we’d like to thank our operational teams for the incredible work they are doing in very difficult conditions. Aid efforts to our teams affected will continue, with shipments of much needed supplies to the BVI and St. Martin currently in route.

Thank you everyone for your continued support, prayers and offers to help with our recovery plans.

The damage sustained at our locations in St Martin and British Virgin Islands is extensive, but our guests are safe and we continue to reach out to all of our team members. Our locations in Antigua and Bahamas have reported all team members safe and minimal impact to our properties. Thankfully Hurricane Jose passed to the Northeast of our bases without further impact. However with major damage to cell phone towers and power outages communications remain difficult at this time. Our locations in Grenada and St Lucia are unaffected and continue to operate charters normally.

While we continue to assess the damage to our fleet and properties, our first concern is the safety of our teams and customers. We have closed our Florida offices as Hurricane Irma continues to move North. Due to precautions taken with our IT infrastructure prior to the arrival of Hurricane Irma you may experience issues with online booking over the next few days.

We will have limited call capacity through Tuesday evening, so we appreciate your patience as wait times may be high.

The impact at our locations in the Caribbean is heartbreaking but our guests are safe and we continue to reach out to all of our team members. However with major damage to cell phone towers and power outages communications remain difficult at this time. We are in the process of assessing the damage to our fleet and properties, but with potential for Hurricane Jose to affect the region, our first concern is the safety of our teams and customers. We are also preparing our Bahamas and Florida locations as Hurricane Irma continues to move North. In response to your overwhelming offers of support, we are setting up a fund for our employees who have been affected and will share details shortly.

Our thoughts go out to all of those affected by Hurricane Irma. This is an unprecedented storm, and we are thankful for the planning and tremendous effort of our operations teams in multiple locations to secure our guests and team members, which is our highest priority. We have reports of extensive damage to our fleet and buildings and will be assessing the situation over the next 24 hours. We continue to monitor developments with the storm and as soon as we have more information we will make it available.
